Cars are becoming gadgets on wheels: steering wheels, wheels, seats and more and more screens. However, Hyundai design head Hak Soo Ha believes there is always room for analog elements.

Speaking at the Canadian International Auto Show, Hack said one of the reasons the brand started building retro concepts like the Pony and N Vision74 is to get designers thinking about how to combine digital and analog functions.

“Right before the Canadian Auto Show, we made cars for CES and autonomous vehicles: if you remove the steering wheel and everything related to the car, you get something that looks like a camper. I want to bring more car interiors and car design in general,” explains Hak Soo Ha.

He noted that as a designer he is naturally interested in new products and must be aware of innovative technologies, but one cannot be guided by this alone in his work.

“As a car designer you also have to take into account the human factor: ergonomics, safety. Humans are, in a sense, slaves to habits. So if you change something people get confused and in an emergency people can panic, so you have to take all that into account.”

Hack believes that the technology of combining innovative and retro should be seamless.
