In the last 13 years, this is the fourth time that the rules have changed regarding the “rings”, so it is not surprising that many drivers, being introduced to new information, are simply confused.

Fortunately, Za Rulem has commentary from a specialist – lawyer Sergei Smirnov talked about all the nuances.

Below is a summary of this comment.

To begin with, let’s see what exactly has changed, or rather, what is no longer an ambiguity in the interpretation of the rules. This has the priority of the driver entering the circle from the main road.

So, here is a list of all options to ride the ring as of March 1, 2023 version:

  • If the “Rotonde” sign is supplemented by the “Hoofdweg” sign, the driver entering the ring has priority.
  • If the “Rotonde” sign is supplemented by the “Give way” sign, those driving around the ring have priority.
  • If only the sign “Rotonde” is present, then those driving around the ring also have priority.
  • If there is a traffic light in front of the roundabout, follow the rules for driving on regulated intersections.
  • If the traffic light does not work, we return to the beginning of this list and look at the signs: these are priority signs (“Main road” or “Give way”) and/or a “Roundabout” sign.

Complete alignment of the situation from a legal point of view.
