On a mechanical box, at the moment of stopping, it is necessary to switch to “neutral”, N. Or press the clutch pedal. It is obvious. But you should not do this on cars with a gun, the expert “Behind the wheel” reminds Mikhail Kolodochkin.

The car isn’t going anywhere, held in place by the brake pedal. That is, in D mode, you can stand in traffic jams for a long time just by pressing the brake pedal. If you frequently move the box from D to P or even to N, this will not benefit you. Although some drivers are sure that this way they extend the life of the machine.

They don’t really extend. On the contrary, frequent switching of the automatic transmission only makes it worse. Yes, and the engine too: as a rule, the minimum idle speed in position D is higher (900 versus 700), and therefore the engine will have to work hard if necessary, albeit not for long.

Therefore, the machine must only be parked (P) before the engine is switched off. But the N mode is only used in the machine for towing a car on a trailer over short distances and at low speeds.
