In 2022, the number of thefts and thefts of motor vehicles in Russia fell by 13.5% to 22.5 thousand cases, a minimum in the twenty-year history of observations.
The following factors contribute to reducing the number of thefts:
- the difficulty of transporting and selling stolen cars
- border closure
- numerous cameras on Russian roads
- the Ministry of the Interior’s fight against illegal dismantling of cars
- introduction of electronic vehicle passports (EPTS).
After the advent of electronic car passports, it became more difficult for criminals to forge documents as it is more difficult to make an electronic forgery than a paper passport.
These studies coincide with insurers’ statistics on theft for 2022, which also noted a drop in the indicator since the beginning of 2022 compared to 2021 by almost half.
