Engines are the hardest. Petrol V8 5.0 (508PN, 375 hp) is rare and very voracious. It goes up to half a million km, but it is annoyed by the stretching of the timing chain (sometimes up to 100 thousand km, the cost of replacement is more than 100 thousand rubles), malfunctions of the water pump and the current heat exchanger.

Diesels are a joint development of Ford and PSA. The new 3.0 (211, 245, 249 hp) is made from the old 2.7 (190 hp) and retains some hereditary sores. Among them are the possibility of turning the liners and the wedge (before the 2013 modernization), the leakage of the front crankshaft oil seal.

On the old one, the Siemens fuel system with piezo injectors gives a lot of problems.

Bosch is on the new – the nozzles are more reliable, but less high-pressure fuel pump racks. You should also keep a close eye on the drive belts (there are three at 3.0!) and clean the EGR valve.

Source 2.7 is estimated at 250 thousand km, the new one lives longer. It does not have an oil dipstick and the electronic level gauge sometimes cuts out, especially in winter. In the absence of a better 3-litre diesel engine in the most energy-efficient version, it must be regarded as optimal.

Gearboxes

Until 2012, a 6-speed automatic ZF 6HP28 worked together with diesel engines, and then an 8-speed 8HP70. It also serves the petrol V8.

Both units are used on various “Germans” and are well studied. Both are prone to overheating, especially in hot traffic jams, and do not tolerate oil starvation: wear accelerates, mechatronics can fail, and so on. The plastic pallet can warp – leakages occur. But 200-250,000 km, with proper care, can withstand most specimens, even under severe operating conditions.

The permanent four-wheel drive (with reduction gear, lockable center and rear axle differentials) is exceptionally reliable. Failures are usually associated with normal wear and tear. It is necessary to check the anthers of the internal CV joints, they crack quite quickly.

  • When driving only on good asphalt, all suspension components work for a long time, more than 100 thousand km. On the bad side, get ready to regularly replace silent pads, front lower ball joints and wheel bearings.
  • The air suspension of expensive versions is great, but after 100-120 thousand it is a guaranteed source of various malfunctions.
  • The electrics are weak – in our climate the wiring quickly turns sour. Often and ingeniously, electronics fail, which are full. Frequent failure of locks of all doors, parking sensors, parking brake. Diagnostic equipment is often needed to determine the causes.
  • The secondary market is dominated by cars with a mileage of about 150 thousand km – it is believed that for the majority it is twisted.
