There are still problems with charging electric vehicles, and at the University of Friedrich-Alexander Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) they tried to solve them in a peculiar way.
Scientists claim that thanks to their solution, there is no need to look for a charging station, be afraid of an empty battery: on an electrified road, you can charge electric vehicles while driving.
A pilot project of such a road has been started in Bavaria (Germany) since 2025, for which about 8 million euros have already been allocated.
The electrified road is being tested by motorists themselves on a kilometer of motorway in northern Bavaria. Induction coils are embedded in the surface layer of the road to charge electric vehicle batteries.
When the car is moving or standing on such a road, it is charged, like a smartphone on a wireless charger.
This makes it possible to charge both company cars and cars. In theory everything looks good, but a few questions arise. How much would a kilometer of such a road cost? Such a coating does not charge a car quickly, you cannot get by with one kilometer, tens of kilometers of such a route are needed. In addition, roads wear out quickly, replacing this “smart” layer with built-in coils also costs a pretty penny.
It is clear that while such roads will become “golden”, but certainly engineers will soon come up with a new, cheaper solution to the problem.
