By law, fire extinguishers must be charged and maintained once every five years. However, many motorists do not give it a second thought and continue to carry an expired fire extinguisher in their car.

Such a fire extinguisher is very likely to fail if it is necessary to turn off the ignition of a car, warned Andrey Voronov, executive director of Yarpozhinvest. In fact, the fire extinguisher will continue to work, but due to the old powder turning to stone, the foam will come out with difficulty, the expert explained.

At the same time, in case of fire, one fire extinguisher may be enough, Voronov added.

“If a car catches fire, it is almost impossible to put it out with one fire extinguisher, especially if a fire breaks out in the engine compartment. I carry a bigger fire extinguisher with me – not two, but four kilos,” – shared the expert.
