They say new spikes are easily installed with circlip pliers and a screwdriver. We tried – you can!
But a normal person will spit on such work already on the third peak. After all, studded tires only make sense if they lack 15-20 or more studs per wheel, and therefore – in terms of four wheels – you will have to perform this operation about a hundred times or even more.
How to mechanize labor?
On sale you can find devices called doshipunami. This allows you to mechanize the process with a screwdriver or drill. The lead screw feeds a nail placed between three or four legs and pushes apart the walls of the hole in the rubber. A second – and a nail in the hole, and the tool is free.
It turned out that it is not so easy to get doshipunas during the season, but we collected seven samples and conducted full tests.
Three designs
By their design, all doshipunas can be divided into those in which the legs, pushing the edges of the hole into the rubber, are made of steel wire, thin spring plates or solid “fangs”.
I especially liked the devices with thin lamellar legs. They deform the edges of the hole to the least extent, while having four legs. All other devices have three legs. And the round base of the stud goes more easily through a square groove in rubber than through a triangular one.
For all doshipunov, the spindles can be easily clamped in the chuck of even a small screwdriver, since they are machined up to 10 mm. At the same time, the larger the thread diameter of the spindle, the longer the doshipun will last.
By the way, the threads must be lubricated – preferably with extreme pressure grease. For example, used in CV joints.

Expert conclusions “Behind the wheel”
We have approved five of the seven doshipuns. The best in our opinion is Doshipun MINI: the price is reasonable and it is convenient to operate.
For a handy and economical car owner, such devices are recommended. But skill is needed to work with any device. For those who rarely pick up a tool, it is better to visit a workshop or buy new studded tires.
