In most cases, motorists know how to behave on the road, but they often deviate from their principles themselves, experts from the American Road Safety Foundation AAA discovered.

For example: 92% called typing while driving a “very” or “extremely” dangerous activity, and 96% said someone in authority wouldn’t approve of them if they knew they were doing it. However, 26% admitted to texting or “chatting” at least once in the 30 days leading up to the survey.

The same goes for aggressive driving: 88% consider it “very” or “extremely” dangerous, 96% say acquaintances would not approve of this behavior, and yet 23% behaved like this at least once in the month prior to the survey.

Violations that drivers allow themselves

The most common of these were:

  • exceeding the speed limit by 25 km/h or more on the highway (50.7%)
  • talking on a mobile device (37.4%)
  • driving while reading text or email on mobile device screens (36.2%).

In addition, 28.2% admitted to having deliberately run a red light at least once.

Nearly one in five (18.8%) said they had driven (at least once in the past 30 days) despite being so tired they were depressed. 7.3% said they got behind the wheel after drinking so much alcohol that they were deprived of their rights, and 5% admitted to using sedatives before getting behind the wheel.

Conclusion

Despite this discrepancy, experts believe that social pressure is an important factor influencing people’s decision to engage in risky driving.

If an act is perceived as dangerous and unsafe by a large part of society, people are less likely to perform it. The bad news is that the likelihood of getting caught and fined (or worse, having your driver’s license stripped) seems to have little impact on most drivers’ decision-making.
