According to the Yomiuri newspaper, the events in Ukraine have also affected the Japanese used car market. New car deliveries have stalled due to a semiconductor shortage, while used car prices continued to rise until recently. After exports to Russia, the largest export destination, fell sharply, used car prices also started to fall.
Yamagin Trading Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), a second-hand exporter, exported between 200 and 300 cars per month to Russia, but in March the volume fell by 90%. Economic sanctions in Japan, the US and Europe have led to temporary depreciation of the rublemaking it difficult for local trading companies to acquire Japanese cars.
Company president Hiroshi Sato sighs: “Most of the cars in Vladivostok are Japanese. If the current situation during one year persevere, the industry as a whole will be difficult.”
Since April 5, the Japanese government has banned the export of cars worth more than 6 million yen (3.9 million rubles) to Russia, both new and used. Japanese businessmen fear that restrictions will tighten in the future, and this will exacerbate the current crisis.
