In the line of Toyota’s “worldwide” sedans, the mid-sized Avensis occupies an intermediate position between the Corolla and Camry.

Market long-lived: passed two restyling (2011, 2015).

engines

All petrol engines are naturally aspirated. Jr 1ZR-FAE 1.6 (132 HP) was only available in the first year of sale and is only compatible with the MCP. Engine 2ZR-FAE 1.8 (147 HP) – the most massive. Friendly with MCP or CVT, as well top 2.0 (152 hp).

Related structures. They all have an aluminum block, distributed injection, timing chain drive and hydraulic tappets. The problems are basically the same.

Increased tendency to form deposits and burn oil. On early engines there are many complaints about electronic malfunctions controlling the height of the intake valves (Valvematic). In early cars, the water pump quickly died – after the first restyling, a modernized one was installed. The timing chain can hold about 150 thousand km.

All engines get problems starting in cold weather over the years. AI-95 is recommended for everyone – lower octane fuel accelerates decomposition. All engines are considered reliable, the final resource depends on the care of maintenance – and is 250-300 thousand km. Engine 2.0 is recognized as the most persistent – the ailments are less pronounced.

Diesels of the D-4D family (1.6, 2.0, more often 2.2) came to us in second-hand form, mainly from Europe. Little is known about 1.6, and 2.2 is known from the RAV4 – very fickle and resource-poor for a diesel. However, it makes sense to think about it, because it is combined with a hydraulic machine (two liters – only with mechanics).

Gearboxes

CVT K111 (Aisin), according to the creators, is capable of 250 thousand km. In reality, this means that in the 100-150 thousand km segment, a bulkhead with cleaning and replacement of worn parts is inevitable. These include sun gear bearings, torque converter rings and clutches, an oil pump, sometimes solenoids, and the belt itself.

Any repair of a road variator is at current prices, and 200 thousand rubles is not the limit.

The device has been changed more than once, the versions after 2012 have become slightly less tender.

Automatic U660E/U760E (the one who is friends with a diesel engine) is a quiet and long playing unit. There are also no special claims on mechanical boxes. For those who work with large engines, it is recommended to change the oil from time to time.

Operational ulcers

  • The pendant received the most flattering reviews. In many machines, the first interventions were necessary after 150 thousand km. Previously, only stabilizer buses were rented, and sometimes they contain more than 80-100 thousand – excellent!
  • With the steering, the situation is reversed – knocks, indicating wear of the bushings, can occur at 30-50 thousand km. The splined connection of the shafts wears out quite quickly.
  • During the first restyling, a number of “styles” were eliminated – for example, the hum of the manual transmission in first gear, flaws in the electronics and malfunctions of the electromechanical parking brake. And most importantly – reminiscent of engines. So restyled Avensis is the most reasonable choice.
