Why are submarines always black?

If we live in a submarine, then, unlike the Beatles, it is not yellow, but most black. Others just don’t exist. But seriously, in music, imagination, or the wonderful world of the future, submarines can be any color, but modern military equipment should be black – for at least two reasons.

Evolution over a million years has led whales and sharks to dark, almost black shades (only the abdomen remains light), because in this way they are less visible in the water: black, as we remember, completely absorbs the light. And this is the first reason why submarine hulls are black: by reflecting a minimum of light, the submarine remains almost invisible on satellite images of a potential enemy.

And the second reason is in the anechoic tiles that cover the submarine’s hull. These tiles are hollow inside, insulate the sound in the hull and also absorb and distort active sonar signals. Such tiles are made of rubber – that’s why they are black.

There are, of course, exceptions: for example, dark green submarines that pretend to be an algae-covered seabed. But these are not strategic boats that only perform patrol functions. They have a simplified design: in particular, there are no expensive anechoic tiles in the casing lining.
