What do you mean, wooden bearings? These are even placed on submarines!

Wooden stern tube bearings – that is, plain bearings with strips pressed into the tube – came up with the idea for engineers to use in the design of the propeller drive. The trick was explained simply: the boom made the mechanism almost silent, which allowed the submarine to go unnoticed for a long time.

Of course, special wood was needed: bakout wood is used in such bearings – otherwise guaiacum, bakout or ironwood. The last version of the name is completely legitimate: the strength on the Jank scale for backout is 4500 units, while for pine and oak, famous for their properties, they are 1225 and 1290, respectively.

In addition, up to 25% of the volume is in the backout resin! This means that bearings made from such a tree do not require lubrication during operation. And yes, they will be very quiet. Bearings made of ironwood, except the USSR, were used by many countries with a submarine fleet. And now they are used on small ships, as well as in the decoration of railway carriages and airplanes.
