Since 1999, it has been mandatory in Spain to place warning triangles at least 50 meters in front of and behind the car. Now the country’s authorities are going to scrap this requirement.

Data from 2015 and 2016 show that placing these triangles on public roads resulted in 50 deaths and nearly 900 injuries.

Some time ago, DGT presented its V-16 geolocation beacon to the European Commission, which is visible at a distance of 1000 meters (instead of the now required 100 m).

V16 is a flashing round amber light indicating the vehicle is out of order and parked on the road. The driver doesn’t have to get out of the car, just roll down the window, reach out and magnetize roof lamp. The device is also capable of transmitting information about the outage in digital form over the mobile network.

The launch of the DGT 3.0 platform is scheduled for January 1, 2026. The certification process for the V16 signal lamps, which connect to the platform via a mobile network with an embedded SIM card, will begin in January 2023.

Network access for devices should be included in the purchase price for several years, so that the user does not incur any additional costs.

While the warning triangle remains mandatory on Spain’s roads, once lawmakers approve this rule (presumably in 2026), such a device may be used instead. By the way, the price of the lamp is low – from 14 euros.
