In winter, you need to warm up not only the engine, but also the gearbox. Why and how to do it if you have a machine, explained driving expert Alexey Revin.
Classic automatic, i.e. a hydromechanical gearbox, very fragile while working in the cold. The thickened working fluid cannot create the necessary pressure to compress the clutch packs and they begin to slip. For the same reason, the torque converter can suffer.
Don’t think that as the engine warms up, the machine warms up too. If the lever was in the P or N position, you need to warm up the box slowly, without making sudden accelerations.
It is more correct to warm up the transmission in position D or R. The choice depends on the way of parking. If the car rests on the curb with its rear wheels, it is better to engage reverse gear and the handbrake. It is better not to get out of the car while warming up, you never know. When the engine has warmed up to 80°C, we can assume that the bucket is ready for operation.
