Ministry of Industry and Trade: Russian auto industry will no longer depend on foreigners

The automotive industry has become one of the most affected sectors of the economy – foreign owners simply left, taking all the skills with them, leaving several idle enterprises.

At the same time, component manufacturers, including foreign ones, who were already localized, remained in Russia. But since the brand itself left, at some point they had nothing to produce.

Initially, it was assumed (and this was in 2007) that foreign manufacturers would work in Russia, gradually increasing the level of localization, and for the main brands they really brought it to a high level. But no one expected such a “mass exodus”.

That is why the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is forming a different structure today: companies and factories will have Russian owners who will cooperate with foreign suppliers from friendly countries.

“For example, Moskvich: the enterprise is from Moscow, management is given to KAMAZ, which in turn has already attracted a foreign partner. That is, the main stakeholder (ed.: stakeholder) must be Russian,” Manturov noted.

With such a development model, competencies and technologies will be developed in Russia and technological independence will become more stable.
