The fact is that in most cars all-wheel drive is implemented through the automatic coupling of the rear axle. This is what can become dangerous in heavy ice and considerable speed (e.g. on a country road).
Abrupt changes in wheel traction should not be allowed on slippery surfaces as they can lead to rather sudden lurching movements, skidding and accidents.
To avoid surprises, in such modes it is better to use the two-wheel drive transmission mode.
