The manifestation of simple human kindness, rare in modern times, was captured by a traffic camera at a busy intersection in Vologda. The incident took place on April 3, and by the middle of the month it had spread massively across social networks. In these frames, we see several people crossing the intersection of Kirov and Leningradskaya streets diagonally, and one woman (you can see she’s limping a bit) doesn’t have time to complete the crossing.
It is worth noting here that in accordance with the traffic rules, diagonal crossing of the intersection is possible only if there is a special marking. Indeed, in 2021, diagonal markings were introduced in Vologda, but at another intersection – Maria Ulyanova and Kozlenskaya streets. This intersection remains so far the only one in the city where a diagonal crossing is allowed.
As for Kirov-Leningradskaya, the issue of applying diagonal markings to it was raised by residents of Vologda on social networks and brought to the attention of the authorities, but so far the intersection has only traditional crosswalks. However, people often pass here diagonally, taking advantage of the fact that all cars are lit in red (and pedestrians in green), simply because it’s faster. As the in-camera episode shows, such a transition isn’t safe.
The cars started moving and the woman was left in the middle of the intersection, not knowing what to do. Fortunately, a car soon stopped in front of her, from which a man got out and helped her to the sidewalk.
Some commentators condemned his further actions – he slammed from the left lane to the right. But most likely, he decided to provide the woman with further assistance, for example, to go home. It’s nice to know that people can still be real people.
