For the research of windshield washer pumps, we decided to choose the ones that are used on the most popular cars built on the B0 platform. These are Lada: Largus, Vesta and XRAY, and Renault: Arkana, Duster, Logan and so on – the list is solid.

There are quite a few reasons for a possible breakdown of pumps – from banal old age to premature corrosion or freezing along with water residue in the cold. In any case, it is not necessary to purchase a tank assembly: you can limit yourself to a washing pump.

We bought a dozen of these products – from eminent to nameless with the proud stigma of high quality (read – high quality). In our file they are listed alphabetically.

What, how and why controlled

First we took flow characteristics: unloaded, when working on two nozzles (like in a real car) and on a muffled highway. The generated pressure was estimated, the liquid flow was measured and the flow consumed by each pump was determined. The results indicate how actively the liquid is being applied to the car window.

We remind you with the transition to winter scrubbers, the viscosity of pumped liquids (especially permissible isopropyl liquids) increases dramatically, which is why it is desirable to have pump performance with a margin.

We then frozen the water-filled pumps by keeping them in this condition at -40°C for 4 hours. Then 10 times in succession were switched from 0.5 to 1.5 seconds with a pause of 1 to 3 seconds.

The pumps were then thawed and after 12 hours the flow pressure indicators were taken again, comparing the data obtained with the original data. Then a test was done resistance to the effects of water freezing and ice thawing cycles. The water-filled pumps were frozen, kept at a temperature of -40 ºС for 3 hours, and then transferred to a heat chamber at a temperature of +40 ºС for 3 hours. And so several times.

Another trial was function test after operation with blocked discharge line (e.g. nozzles are frozen). The pumps in this mode were turned on 6 times within a minute for 2-5 seconds, then the properties they gave were checked again.

The next test is heat resistant: exposure to 100 ºС for three hours (hot summer!) with subsequent measurement of parameters.

In the last check source: 500 cycles in “5 seconds on – 15 seconds off” mode. Then – another measurement of characteristics.

It is difficult to advise buying a product that is not mentioned in any way. The pump passed the test, but all parameters are quite modest. We can’t recommend it.

Sum up

At the very first measurements, the detachment of fighters thinned out: the AT pump had to be “taken out of flight”. After a few seconds of work, it actually stopped pumping.

Tests with a blocked anchor calmly passed all but Febi – the maximum pressure after being in the freezer dropped by 0.2 atm. However, the absolute value of the pressure remained quite high.

After temperature changes, AMD, Kortex and nameless high quality pumps reduced their output pressure and flow. And after heating, the Gallant pump became capricious – its performance dropped 4 times, which is why it was removed from the test. The other 8 pumps passed the substance test without any problems. In the final table, we indicated both the initial characteristics of all pumps and the final ones, taking into account the tests carried out.

We recommend five of a dozen pumps. Stellox turned out to be better than others. We also note Start Volt and Lada Genuine.

When choosing a pump for cars on the B0 platform, including sedans (that is, without a rear window), you should pay attention to pumps from the same manufacturers. The difference is that in pumps for sedans, the armature of the electric motor rotates only in one direction, and the liquid is fed to one fitting, to the windshield. “Bilateral” pumps with two fittings can also be placed on a sedan, drowning out the “additional” outlet with a piece of hose with a plug (for example, a screw). True, pumps with two nozzles are slightly more expensive.

A curious technical solution was once used in the famous Volkswagen Beetle. There was no windscreen washer pump: the energy source was … air from the spare wheel. A closed reservoir with a sprayer was constantly under pressure, and a button valve on the dashboard opened or closed the passage of water – that’s all.
