Toyota has launched an all-new Prius in the US with an impressive design and improved performance, but one thing remains the same: the catalytic converter is one of the most sought after by thieves.
The component contains precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium making it worth noting. Thieves have learned to detach it from the vehicle quite easily and do so in less than a minute.
It just seems that all catalytic converters are the same, as they are all designed to clean exhaust gases from harmful chemicals. Thieves have their favorites, and for years Toyota Prius and Tundra catalytic converters have topped the list.
That is why Toyota offers to install a protective cover for this part at the dealer at an additional cost. And for customers buying a 2023 Toyota Prius, you get the option to pre-specify protection before ordering a car. A similar option is offered for older Prius, current Corolla, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner.
The shield is custom made from 5052 aluminum and secured with special screws.
It is possible that thieves will not try to unscrew this thing, but simply cut it, but still they offer such an option. The housing price is $140, not including labor. With a new catalytic converter costing over $1,000, I’m sure many customers will be interested in this offering.
