The exhibition “Back to the New Year”, which opened today in the Special Purpose Garage (VDNKh, Paviljoen 53), tells about the New Year’s history of our country from the beginning of the 19th century to the first quarter of the 21st century.
The exposition includes New Year’s toys, postcards, souvenirs and even carnival masks – all this tells how the New Year was celebrated in the Russian Empire, the USSR and Russia.
The exhibition “Back to the New Year” is a great way to create a New Year’s mood and immerse yourself in the magical and joyful atmosphere of the holiday, remember your childhood and find out how the older generations celebrated the New Year celebrated.
“In Christmas decorations, postcards, records and other New Year’s paraphernalia, visitors will be able to trace the most important milestones in the country’s history. For example, in the late 1930s, in honor of the development of the North, Christmas trees were decorated with figurines of polar explorers, in the mid-1940s with tanks and airplanes, and in the 1960s toys in the form of rockets and astronauts appeared. After the premiere of the movie Circus, circus-themed figurines became popular, and after the release of the movie Carnival Night, toys in the shape of bells became popular,” says Yulia Kuklina, General Director of the GON Museum.
In addition, at the exhibition you can see a unique collection of “Soviet Santa Clauses” and real “Kremlin gifts”. And nearby you will find a selection of original New Year’s children’s masks from the collector Irina Vorobyova, original posters of New Year’s films from the State Film Fund.
Modern traditions of celebrating the New Year began to take shape in 1935, when the first Christmas trees were held for Soviet children and the immutable attributes of the holiday were recorded, including the beloved Father Frost and the Snow Maiden.
