The artificial intelligence of the company, which develops the design of rims, was called FelGAN.
Of course, the German brand does not experiment with the shape of the wheel – the rims remain round, but the design of the rims has become very, very interesting.
Before stating that design is the most human creation process, it should be noted that Audi did not replace the designers, but only gave them a new tool.
FelGAN is an abbreviation of the German word for “rim” (Felge) and “GAN”, which stands for Generative Adversarial Networks. GAN is a special form of self-learning computer program that uses two algorithms that compete during the learning phase. Both algorithms are designed to learn from their own mistakes and continuously improve.
One of the algorithms makes the images “so real that even the human eye can hardly distinguish them from real photos”.
The disks created by artificial intelligence serve only as a source of inspiration for designers – this is a kind of center for spontaneous ideas. Finally, the tool allows designers to experiment with shape, color, surface texture, and more in real time.
That is, the design process does not rely entirely on the ideas of artificial intelligence. Designers can upload their projects and photos to the program.
The final step is to create a disk prototype. It is made of plastic or aluminum using a high-tech milling machine.
