At what “minus” should the car work?
Technical regulation 018/2011 “On the safety of wheeled vehicles” mandatory requirements regarding the temperature limits at which the vehicle must remain operational are regulated only for ambulances (from minus 40 ° C to plus 40 ° C).
For other vehicle categories, the temperature limits are set by the manufacturer and listed in the instruction manual.
Standard values for operating temperature ranges and limiting operating temperatures are also given in GOST 15150-69 (as amended).
For vehicles of the “basic” climate version “U” these values are from minus 40 °C to plus 40 °C.
According to GOST R 50992-2019, developed during the development of GOST 15150-69, for vehicles that are individually owned and intended only for exclusive seasonal use under certain conditions, the manufacturer may set a narrower range of operating and maximum operating temperatures.
These standards are of an advisory nature.
How about starting the engine?
The requirements of GOST R 54120–2010 are as follows:
- for petrol engines cold start temperature minus 20 °C in basic equipmentand with the help of start-up aids – minus 30 ° C;
- for diesel engines with a combustion chamber in the piston and turbocharger, with a compression ratio of at least 15, cold start temperature – minus 10°Cand using start-up aids – minus 20–25 °C, depending on combustion chamber design.
- when using engine thermal preparation systems for commercial vehicles, the cold start temperature is minus 45 °C.
It is clear that any car manufacturer who seriously expects to sell cars in Russia exceeds the requirements of this GOST.
