If a stranger gets behind the wheel of a working car with a standard anti-theft system, he can travel unlimited distance, even if the proximity chip key remains in the owner’s pocket. Andrey Kondrashov, head of Andrey Kondrashov’s Laboratory, specializing in anti-theft protection, told socialbites.ca about this. He warned citizens who like to stay away from cars with the smart key while it heats up in the parking lot – attackers can take advantage of this.
“According to all safety standards, including Europe and America, the system will report that the key is not in the cabin, but the engine will start and the offender will be able to arbitrarily drive the car for a long distance. Having reached the ground and turned off the engine, he will not be able to start it again, ”Kondrashov explained to socialbites.ca.
According to him, automakers are prohibited from using forced engine shutdown while on the move for road safety reasons. In such cases, the latest Mercedes-Benz models have the function of stopping the engine during a short stop at traffic lights. But the expert added that it can only be activated at a dealer service center, and most car owners neglect this measure.
“In Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser Prado 150 vehicles, the hacker can even come to the scene, remove a certain relay with the engine running, and then plug it back in and start the car again. The car will still think the key was read,” emphasizes Kondrashov.
The anti-theft specialist advises the anti-theft specialist that you can combat this type of theft with the help of immobilizers with an additional identification function of the driver – using tags or a special code that the driver enters with the standard buttons of the car when starting to move.
