How to understand what a flat tire is
Tubeless tires, which are the vast majority these days, usually do this slowly, so you don’t notice a puncture for a long time. Especially if bad weather prevailed outside the window – from heavy rain to snowfall: in such conditions, the driver will not immediately understand that something is wrong with the car.
In any case, it is easier to feel the puncture of the front wheel: the car begins to pull in its direction. The higher the tire profile, the stronger the effect: the car begins to warp noticeably. On the contrary, a flat tire with a profile of about 45%, but in a run-flat version, is almost unnoticeable.
Rapid pressure loss in a high profile tire, and at high speed, can be very dangerous. As for the rear wheels, the driver often knows the problem only by the characteristic sound, reminiscent of clapping.
What to do if a fast racing car clearly loses control due to steering problems
- We hold the steering wheel firmly, trying to maintain the trajectory of movement.
- We take our foot off the gas, brake the engine.
- We try not to press the brake pedal – except perhaps to disengage the previously engaged cruise control.
We feel the tendency of the car’s behavior and try to taxi slowly to the place of a possible stop.
