Anyone who drives at maximum speed in Austria will soon have to deal with the confiscation of the car. This is provided for by legislative amendments introduced at the initiative of the Ministry of Transport.
According to the document, anyone who exceeds the speed limit in the city by 60 km/h and outside the city by 70 km/h is not only faced with temporary loss of a driver’s license. The vehicle is impounded on the spot.
“Road rage is dangerous to the lives of everyone on the street. These people just have to “pull the murder weapon out of their hands”, considers Transportation Secretary Leonora Gewessler.
The responsible body of the district administration must check the previous driving behavior of the driver within two weeks. If the reckless driver has been “spotted” at least once before, the seized car will be sold at auction. 70% of the proceeds go to the road safety fund, the rest of the money goes to the municipality.
Drivers who exceed the speed limit by 80 km/h in built-up areas or by 90 km/h outside the city risk losing their vehicle immediately. However, there are limitations. If the vehicle is owned, leased or rented by another person, it cannot be auctioned due to violation of third party property rights. For these cases, a confiscation of two weeks is calculated and the offender will not be issued a driver’s license for life.
The legislative initiative is currently under consideration and could enter into force in mid-2023. According to statistics, there are 400 to 500 cases of abnormal speeding in this country every year that the new law could apply to.
