With the onset of winter, motorists are wondering whether it is possible to drive on summer tires or whether they will be fined. A similar question arises in summer, but with regard to winter tires.

Let’s start with the good news: there is no penalty for off-season tire use in Russia. Yes, there is constant talk of its introduction, but “things are still there”.

There are fines for driving a car with malfunctions, which are prescribed in art. 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, but off-season tires are not listed among the faults.

The List of malfunctions and conditions under which driving vehicles is prohibited does not say a word about it (see section 5). It mentions the residual depth of the tread pattern, external damage, size, mounting … But nothing is said about seasonal influences.

And now the “bad” news: nothing but common sense prevents you from driving on summer tires in winter. The probability of an accident in this case rises to 100%, and it is good if it is only a minor collision without casualties and injuries.
