Out of ignorance, some drivers put the car on the handbrake in the cold, and some in the winter after washing. This is categorically impossible to do, explained the expert “Behind the wheel” Maxim Gomyanin, and here’s why.
In this case, the brake pads may freeze. It doesn’t matter if you have disc or drum brakes. They will have to be broken down. Worst of all will be an older car, in which the parking brake mechanism is quite rusty.
If you try to “break” the brake pads, you risk breaking the parking brake cable. The pads may be deformed. A whole epic begins: the car must be transported to the service on a tow truck or try to repair it yourself on the spot. It’s uncomfortable in the cold.
The simplest thing is not to get into such a situation at all. To do this, having just left the sink, brake intensively several times: then the mechanism will dry out. In the parking lot, do not put the car on the handbrake, but put it in gear. And if you have a car with an automatic transmission, the parking position is sufficient. Try to avoid parking on a steep slope.
