Volkswagen is currently investigating whether the subcompact VW Polo is economically viable given the imminent transition to the new eco standard.

At the beginning of November 2022, the European Commission introduced a new Euro-7 emission standard, which car manufacturers must apply from mid-2025 and which will make cars (according to the forecast of European Commission specialists) 90-150 euros more expensive.

However, VW boss Thomas Schaefer is skeptical about these calculations. Instead, he predicts that car prices, especially micro and small cars, could rise by 5,000 euros for the end consumer. And this will affect the current lineup, more specifically the VW Polo. The model currently costs (as of November 2022) from 19,925 euros in Germany.

According to Schaefer, Volkswagen engineers are currently studying the provisions of the new emission standard. “We still need about two weeks,” says the VW boss. However, if their worst fears are confirmed, they will definitely stop investing in this model.

What about electric cars?

At the same time, the manufacturer’s plans for electric vehicles remain unchanged. In the subcompact segment, Volkswagen has already announced two small, fully electric models from 2025. The entry price for them should be less than 25,000 euros, while making an electric car cheaper than 20,000 euros is not yet possible due to the high cost of batteries.
