The VAZ-21179 engine, the working volume of which is 1.8 liters, is designed on the basis of the proven VAZ-21127 engine. It has been produced since 2016 and may seem like a great tried and true option. But this is not entirely true, warns an expert from Za Rulem, the oldest and most authoritative automotive publication in Russia, Alexey Revin.
In addition to expensive maintenance, the engine has significant drawbacks. Especially the oil burner. At the current cost of oils, this is a real problem.

The instructions for the engine indicate that for every thousand kilometers it can eat oil in the amount of 700 ml. That is, from one oil change to another, the owner of a Lada with a 1.8 engine will fill it with about 10.5 liters of oil.
The reason for the maslozhora is in the design, which means that it is simply impossible to handle it.

– The VAZ-21179 engine is made on the basis of a 1.6-liter engine block. At the same time, it was possible to increase the piston stroke only by installing a crankshaft with a larger crank and a shortened connecting rod. But an engine with a short connecting rod creates a large lateral force that is transferred by the piston to the cylinder wall. In addition, the linear speed of the piston increases. And all this leads to a greater likelihood of wear and increased wear of pistons and cylinders.
Increase the mounting clearance of the piston in the cylinder to avoid problems. There are frequent cases when when dismantling an engine with a mileage of 20-30 thousand kilometers, a gap of up to 0.1 mm was found (for most engines it does not exceed 0.03-0.04 mm). In addition, the piston is short and bends into the cylinder with a large opening at tangible angles.
This mode deteriorates the performance of the piston rings. Especially the cast iron oil scraper with tubular structure. In addition, the oil drain holes in it are small and get clogged over time. And this only increases the maslozhor.
The expert also said that pistons with different anti-friction coatings, which can be distinguished from ordinary ones by dark gray and brown, could not eliminate the oil burn.
