Despite the fact that October is characterized by low temperatures (at night they can be minus), it is too early to switch summer tires for winter tires, according to the Ministry of Transport of the Moscow region.

“If you plan on riding studded tires in the winter, don’t do it until the snow is covering the roads. Spikes destroy the canvas quite strongly and also increase the braking distance, and in rainy weather it is much worse to drive on studded tires than on regular tires,” the department writes on its website.

Experiments by Za Rulem, the oldest and most authoritative automotive publication in Russia, have shown that summer tires are better than winter tires in light frost – the car behaves better on them. But only on the condition that there is no snow or ice on the road.

As for friction (non-studded) winter tires, these can already be fitted to a car to avoid seasonal queues at tire shops.

“Exchanging summer tires for non-studded winter tires is already quite possible, the use of Velcro is more preferable. Such rubber is less harmful to roads and provides good grip on both snow and ice, as well as on the so-called porridge ”, advises the Ministry of Transport of the Moscow region.

The ministry’s experts also reminded that it is possible to change tires for winter tires as soon as the average daytime temperature in your region drops to +5 degrees Celsius.
